Description:

Imagine if the fate of the world depended on annual rituals of creating decorated eggs to thwart evil spirits, welcome spring and the return of the sun, and offer prayers for wealth and good harvest. Such are the origins of Pysanky, the ancient Ukrainian art of decorating eggs. Dating to prehistoric times, pysanky (meaning ‘to write’) are stunning, colorful eggs “written” by applying beeswax to the surface of an egg in carefully choreographed successive layers. Thousands of traditional designs, some simple and some incredibly complex, can be created based on floral, geometric, and animal patterns. As part of our own local tradition celebrating Butterflies in the Garden, you can learn some of the techniques for producing butterfly pysanky. Learn basic techniques for this wonderful hobby just in time for Easter.
